Introduction

Here’s a story to start with…

The years between late 1845 and 1852 are now known as the Great Famine. It was a time not just of mass starvation but tragic outbreak of disease and then emigration. 

All of this was happening in Ireland and it began because of a potato crop failure caused by late blight, a disease that brought devastation to the vegetable’s leaves and the edible roots or tubers, which is why it was also called the Irish Potato Famine. Over a million men, women and children were killed and another million fled.

On July 16 1546, a very tired and near-to-death 26-year-old Anne Askew sat on a wooden chair perched up on a stake. Below her were kindling gathered around and next to her were three other stakes all spaced apart. Her friends, John Lascelles, Nicholas Belenian and John Adams, fellow Protestants were all tied firmly with rope. In a matter of minutes, in the market square of Smithfield, all of them would be burned to their death.

Java Man

Known ‘scientifically’ by the name Pithecanthropus erectus to simply mean ‘erect ape man,’ the Java Man is supposedly an ape-like man that was capable of standing upright. Evolutionists later attempted to give the fossil further recognition, calling it Homo erectus. 

The Java Man was first discovered in some gravel bed somewhere on the island of Java, Indonesia in 1891 and then 1892 by Dr Eugène Dubois, a Dutch paleoanthropologist and an avid evolutionist looking to nail Creationism. With this discovery, he thought he had found the missing link.

What the huge expanse of gravel bed turned out to be were dozens of random animal and human bones. None of them seem to resemble anything unusual. Certainly, this wasn’t a burial site either. Yet, Dubois could pick three of the myriad bones and returned home to Europe declaring, “Here is our missing link!”

Dealing with the pre-Adamaic days

The Bible is very clear on the premise that no humans came before Adam and Eve. In Genesis, Moses wrote:

“This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the Earth. When the Lord God made the Earth and the heavens, neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the Earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the Earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land. Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils and the man became a living person. Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east and there, He placed the man He had made. …

“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him. …

“So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib and He brought her to the man.” (Gen 2:4-8, 18, 21-22, NLT)

These verses offer us important cues in which we can establish a few incontrovertible facts.

In 1693 on this day, June 10, Pope Innocent XII installed a feast day to honour the woman who was to become the mother of James VII of Scotland, also II of England. 

This woman, as unlikely as it might have been, had lived her entire life on the edge of conflict. From the day she was born to her return to her country of belonging, this was a time in history when England and Scotland were coalescing into separate sovereign kingdoms.

Around the same period, a Scottish prince had just lost his beloved father King Duncan but was later to take revenge by killing his murderer, Macbeth. Had Shakespeare decided to write a sequel to Macbeth, he might even have immortalised this very woman into the history of perennial literary favourites. 

She would have given him an innately powerful and quietly influential heroine who was every bit the queen that she became. She would have fitted very snugly into his stage and become a favourite character.

Her name was Margaret of Scotland.

On that fateful day, June 5 754AD, an eighty-year man was sat quietly reading the Gospels in his tent in Dokkum between Franeker and Groningen in Frisia (now Netherlands) while he waited for new converts to arrive. They were due him to confirm. He had been harbouring hope to bring Christ to the Frisians and so had decided to convene a meeting.

But that was not to be. As he sat there, a group of furious pagan worshippers pounced on the aged archbishop. Pleading with his co-workers not to intervene but to back down, saying, “Cease fighting. Lay down your arms for we are told in Scripture not to render evil for good but to overcome evil by good.” His only token defence was the book he was reading – the Gospels – which he placed atop his head as protection.

For years, I’ve always wondered how God’s Word reconciled with all the evidences we have of prehistoric man. National Geographic is full of articles on all sorts of prehistoric skulls and bones found virtually everywhere around the world but they’re not the only ones reporting them. 

It seems everyone is convinced of two things – firstly we came from primate material and secondly, the human race is far older than the Bible tells us. And in both cases, man seems to challenge God in what we think is the truth. It seems that God might be withholding the reality of our history from us. Or is He?
